3 Things That Will Instantly Make You More Money

The first and easiest thing you have to start doing is just SMILE.

You should even be smiling when or if you have to say something bad!

For example, let’s say you are out of a side item that they tried to order:

Instead of saying “Unfortunately we don’t have truffle fries” with a frown on your face, you should say “We don’t have truffle fries, BUT we do have Regular fries, sweet potato, or tater tots. Which sounds good?” with a smile.

The second thing is going to be Selling INSTEAD of Upselling.

Keep in mind, the combination of selling and upselling is AMAZING, but if I had to say which one is more important it would be selling.

Upselling is when you add something to an item they already ordered.

Selling is like selling an appetizer, special/feature, or a 2nd or 3rd drink.

I’ll give you quick tips for all 3 of those:

  1. Apps - Just ask “What are we sharing? Calamari, Baked Clams, a Salad…etc?

  2. Specials / Features - ASK THE GUEST QUESTIONS (this could be before, after or while describing the dish / cocktail)

  3. 2nd / 3rd drinks - Ask “same thing or something different?” or “Another one now or in a few minutes” when they are at ⅓ of the way full.

The third and final thing is actually giving WARM service.

Warmth is the feeling that people get when someone is being hospitable.

I’ll give you some examples of WARM and NOT-SO warm questions that servers ask all of the time:

Not-So WARM:

  • Are you ready to order?

  • Did you need anything else?

  • Did you save room for dessert?

Warm:

  • What questions do you have for me? What may I describe? (big smile, enthusiastic)

  • What else? OR Who else? - (Look around at everyone at the table)

  • What are we sharing? Tres leches with caramel and whipped cream? Hot fudge brownie with vanilla ice cream, Espresso martinis?
