🍸 Weekly Lesson:
Don’t Assume How The Guest Wants It
Great servers are the ones that know when to assume and when to ask.
What I mean is: sometimes you should just assume they want more napkins because they are running low. For this instance, you should NOT ask them if they want more napkins because the answer is obvious.
For other things, like whether or not they want to drink their beer from the bottle/can or pour it into a glass, you should ask.
A good rule of thumb to know when to ask or when to just do it yourself is to ask yourself: “Is this something that all people have a different preference on or is it something that is the same for everyone.”
Don’t get me wrong, most of the time you can bring or do things without asking and without mentioning it.
You should be thinking about the fact that people don’t want their lemon or lime actually inside the drink because they want to squeeze it before throwing it in there.
If it's already in the water, soda or cocktail then they have to stick their fingers in the liquid in order to squeeze it.
So if your restaurant doesn’t cut a slit in the lemons/limes then you should just put them on a little plate and serve them on the side. BUT if they run out of lemons, you can just bring a few more without asking!
Furthermore, it is not a bad thing to ask them what they prefer OR ask them if they want more lemons sometimes.
This can save a restaurant a lot of money if all of the staff is doing it.
So if you already brought them a few rounds of extra lemons or limes (I’ll just keep using the lemons/limes example), you can ask: “Would you like some more lemons or limes?”.
You can do the same thing if your restaurant has free bread service.
There is technically no right or wrong, but usually I will bring the first free refill (or more lemons or bread) without asking and then start asking after that.
This allows me to give them great service without interrupting them while also thinking about saving the restaurant some money.
