🍸 Weekly Lesson:
Sloppy Verbiage
Changing your verbiage as a server is one of the easiest ways to stand out.
Think about all of the things that EVERY server says and just stop saying them.
I have said this so many times, but when you say things that every other server says, it makes the guest think that you are just like the other servers.
When they think that, they think they should tip you like every other server.
YOU DO NOT WANT THAT.
Some of the most powerful examples are done in the beginning.
I’ll leave a list of 10 examples below, but I want to talk about the first one:
Changing “Did you want a drink?” to “May I offer you a beverage?”
The verbiage changes that are in the beginning are always going to be the most impactful.
It sets the tone and makes the guest INSTANTLY think that you are better than every other server OR at least show them that you take it seriously.
Here Are 10 Sloppy Verbiage Changes:
❌ Wrong way - “Did you want a drink?”
✅ Right Way - “May I offer you a beverage?”
❌ Wrong way - “How are you?”
✅ Right Way - “Welcome in!” or “Welcome to ______”
❌ Wrong way - “Did you need change?”
✅ Right Way - “I will be right back with your change!”
❌ Wrong way - “Did you want an appetizer”
✅ Right Way - “What starter were you thinking? Baked clams, oysters, etc.”
❌ Wrong way - “Here are some more napkins!”
âś… Right Way - DO THINGS SILENTLY!
❌ Wrong way - “GUYS”
✅ Right Way - “Everyone” or “Y’all” or NOTHING! Just say “Hi, welcome to ___!
❌ Wrong way - “Can I”
✅ Right Way - “May I”
❌ Wrong way - “How did you want that cooked?”
✅ Right Way - “How would you like that prepared?”
❌ Wrong way - “Are you still working on that?”
✅ Right Way - “Still enjoying?”
❌ Wrong way - “No Problem!” or “No worries!”
✅ Right Way - “Of course!” or “Absolutely” or JUST SMILE AND NOD!
The last example of “Of course” or “Absolutely” is a little tricky.
And all of these are a little tricky because you can’t say all of them too many times.
When you say things over and over again, you start to become a robot.
So work on changing it up almost every time.
And you don't have to change the entire phrase.
Just change 1 or two words each time.
